New Pioneer Coop

Catching Up With the Times with a New Digital Presence

When Iowa City’s popular New Pioneer Co-op, affectionately known as NewPi to its potential members, was planning to open a new store, they knew it was time to give their stale, dated website a fresh new look and improved functionality. Proud of their roots as one of Iowa’s earliest “health food cooperatives”, NewPi turned to Fusionfarm to design and develop a modern, more functional website that retained the charming, grassroots history of the co-op while bringing it into the digital age.

Services Involved

New Image Comes Alive with Functional Website Design

Founded in 1971, NewPi had updated and redesigned their branding regularly over the years but many of these updates were never evident on the previous website design. In addition, while most of its upscale, health conscious clientele was already heavily reliant on their smart phones and health apps, NewPi’s website was neither mobile responsive, nor capable of allowing for basic eCommerce application. More importantly, their current website was difficult to manage, making even simple content updates and layout changes difficult for NewPi’s in-house marketing team.

Creating a Clear Image with Functional Web Design

NewPi had marketing professionals and graphic designers on staff who knew what they wanted. They just needed help executing their vision. Fusionfarm presented several iterations of the new web design until the entire team was satisfied that their vision had been realized. In addition, we recommended several tools to improve the functionality of the website, including an easy-to-update calendar and registration system for their cooking classes, as well as, an eCommerce solution for gift cards and classes. We built their website on the easy-to-use content management system (CMS), WordPress, and provided training as well as ongoing support.

Web Traffic and eCommerce Soar after Redesign

In the first year of the new website, NewPi has increased its traffic by over 50% and the staff is thrilled with the easy use WordPress CMS. Not only has traffic to the website increased, visitors have wholeheartedly adopted the online registration system for cooking classes. While eCommerce capabilities were not the major driver of the website redesign, these new capabilities have generated enough sales to cover the cost of the website redesign nearly two times over in the first year.  During the 2014 holiday season, the first year NewPi offered online gift cards, sales topped $5,000.00 in that period alone. In addition, with a much improved mobile experience, NewPi saw its mobile traffic increase by 12% in the first year alone.
